How to Treat Kidney Disease in Dogs

"Hi, I'm Dr. Aimee Beger. I'm a veterinarian, and today, we're going to be talking about treating your dog that has been diagnosed with kidney disease or kidney failure. Kidney disease is a very common disease that we see in dogs and in cats in general practice. Kidney disease is, unfortunately, something that is not preventable and not curable, but it is treatable. What we typically do for treating dogs with kidney disease is to first, of course, do some blood work, and to check your dog's urine to indeed verify that they have kidney disease. Once it's been determined that they do have renal, or kidney disease we like to put them on a low phosphorous, low protein diet, add some omega-3 fatty acid supplementation to their daily routine, and to ensure that they have plenty of water. When your dog is showing signs of kidney disease you may notice that they are drinking larger than normal amounts of water, and infre, or and frequent urination. Sometimes, your pet will stop eating, and may even start to vomit. So, if you see any of those signs you should seek your veterinarian's care."
