"I'm Jonathan Ayres with Network for Success and today we're going to talk about what is a computer router? Well, a computer router is a device that you have to have in order to have a network. What is a network? A network consists of a number of computers that are connected together to share information or work on common applications or projects. You could also have printers on your network, and other devices. Now what a computer router is used for is to take the data that is being transmitted between the computers and make sure that it gets routed to the right computers. And this is done by a scheme called addressing and it uses a certain type of a protocol. This day and age, we use TCPIP protocol, which allows the data to flow over a cable and go between computers. Now, when a computer is connected to a router, all of the computers that it wants to talk to will also be connected to that router. Now, there are various types of routers, and we have what are called wired routers and wireless routers. Now a wired router will only transmit data if you have a cable, and I have a cable right here in front of me, an Ethernet cable. So you have to have an Ethernet cable in order for a wired router to work. On a wireless router, you could use either a cable or just use the radio waves that come out of a wireless router. However, you have to remember with a wireless router that you have to bring the signal in first and that's going to come in through a cable. Wireless routers have to be provided the information through a cable and then they transmit it out by radio waves. So there are two types of routers. We most commonly know wireless routers in the home because everybody has wireless."
