"I'm Jonathan Ayres with Network For Success. And today we're going to talk about, what is a DSL modem? Well a DSL modem is a modem that is used to connect your computer to the Internet through a telephone line. What does DSL stand for? Digital Subscriber Line. And AT&T coined this term in order to be able to sell services over the telephone lines. So what they're selling you is a digital signal in order for you to get the Internet. And when it comes to your house, you're going to need to get some way for that signal to get to your computer, so it comes across the copper telephone lines, and when it enters your house it has to have a device that converts it to signals that you're computer will understand. And that's what a digital signal unit does, it takes care of making that conversion and providing the ports for you to plug your cables in to, whether you're going to put up a wireless router or connect directly to it with a Ethernet cable, you're going to have to have the ports in the back to be able to do that. And that's what the DSL modem provides."
