"Hi, I'm Harvey Kronberg, I'm with Austin Flag and Flagpole and one of the occasional questions we get is who ordered the production of the first American flag? Up until the Continental Conventions in seventeen-seventy-seven, we had a whole series of Colonial flags, battle flags, there was no single unified flag. On June fourteenth of seventeen-seventy-seven, the Continental Convention decided that there needed to be a single American flag and just ironically before that convention, George Washington who was then the general of the Continental Army of the early American army had been visiting with Betsy Ross with a number of other folks who were signers of the first American documents, and discussing a flag, when the constitutional or the Continental Convention ordered the production of the flag, they had already selected Betsy Ross to do it, Betsy Ross ironically knew George Washington, they actually went to the same church. They had pews adjacent to each other at the same church. And the story goes is that when they were talking to Betsy Ross and describing that they needed stars and stripes that Betsy Ross had an upholstery company at that time and she demonstrated how to cut a single star in one stroke without having to make multiple cuts. It's so impressive that they decided that she was absolutely qualified and turned over the production of the first American flag to her."
