"My name is Christine Marquette, and I'm a registered and licensed dietitian with The Austin Regional Clinic, and I've been asked how to lose weight with your boyfriend. Losing weight when you have support of friends or family is always easier than when you're trying to do it alone, so getting the help of your boyfriend is a good way to tackle this. If you both need to lose weight then that's great. One of the things that you want to keep in mind is think of things that you both like to do, because physical activity really needs to be a part of your weight loss program. So, if you both enjoy walking that's a great activity that you could do together. After you have a say your evening meal, your dinner meal you can go out for a walk. Try to aim for the minimum thirty minutes. If you could get closer to an hour that would be even better. The other thing that you can do supportive between the two of you is make sure that you have discussed what types of foods that you both like to eat. Make sure that y'all are choosing very lean sources, very low fat sources of foods. If they are including fats you want to make sure that they are the healthy fats, so that resources of fats such as nuts, seeds, peanut butter, avocado, or if it's something that's cooked in an oil in oils such as canola oil or olive oil. The bad fats that you want to avoid are going to be your saturated fats and trans-fats, so the saturated fat would be, for example, the skin of chicken, or the fat in whole milk or in a lot of full fat cheeses, the fat around a pork chop or around a steak. That's the kind of fat that you want to make sure you're trimming off. That's the bad fat that will do best if you avoid. Other items that you want to make sure that you limit or avoid are high calorie beverages, so things such as regular sodas, a lot of the sports drinks, alcoholic beverages; they all tend to have a lot of calories, with the exception of the ultra light beers. So, make sure that if you do like to indulge in alcoholic beverage that you are still limiting it. Again, it's a good way to get some support from your boyfriend. You both can decide that you're going to limit your alcohol intake, you're going to limit your beverage intake of things that have a lot of calories to them. And then, when you go out to eat you both can decide that you're going to choose from the healthier portions of the menu. A lot of restaurants offer heart healthy choices on their menu. Those choices are always going to be much lower in the bad fats, and much lower in overall calories. So, it can be a good way to work on weight loss is to enlist the help of your boyfriend. Make sure that you do physical activities together and that you are both on the same page as far as choosing healthy foods."
