"Your aquarium should be checked on a daily basis and your fish watched, make sure they are doing OK. Another thing that we sometimes run across when we're checking our tank out is some unsightly algae. Nobody likes to look at it, it does serve a purpose, but most of us want to get rid of it. First off what you want to do with your tank is, to prevent algae, we want to make sure that our light is on for about 12 hours a day. If we do it any less than that, there's a possibility that we're going to get brown algae. If we do it more than 12 hours a day, we're going to develop green algae. One thing you can do is if it's on your glass, you can use something that I have here which is called Magnafloat. It's a great little tool that I can use and move along the glass wherever I have algae on the glass it will help me clean that up. And you can do that on a regular basis. Very easy to use once it comes undone it starts to float to the top, magnetize, grab it back again. The other thing we're going to do to maintain and get rid of algae is make sure we're doing regular water changes and you want to do that with a gravel siphon. A once a month water change about 25 percent of your water is going to help take care of that. There's a lot of nutrients that end up in the algae, the food waste and foot itself that is going to basically act as a fertilizer and clean that. So when we're cleaning for algae, we want to make sure the glass is kept clean, we want to keep our gravel siphoned on a monthly basis, your plants probably need to be removed and cleaned, we're never going to use bleach, its all going to be hard work with scrubbing. My name is Michael and we're going to get rid of some algae and now you know how."
