"Hello. I'm Matthew Burbank and I'm associate professor at the University of Utah. And I'd like to talk to you a little bit about recognizing political symbols. Traditionally the symbols of the two major parties have been that the democrats are represented by a donkey and that the republicans are represented by an elephant. And these two symbols are historically symbols that either political opponents or the parties themselves have adopted. By now both parties are quite comfortable with these symbols and use them. And so very often when you see, for example, lawn signs or television commercials featuring republican candidates you will often see a picture of an elephant to indicate that that is a republican candidate and very often for democratic candidates for lawn signs or TV commercials you will often see a picture of a donkey to indicate that this is a democratic candidate."
