"Hello. My name is Nancy Cusick. I'm a professional dog trainer in Austin, Texas. You can visit my website at trainmydogs.com. Today we're going to show you how to teach your dog to lay down. There are three ways to get behaviors to happen. One is by luring your dog into position. You can use food, you can use toys and lure them. Niah. So we're going to lure Niah into her sit position. And then we're going to take the treat and lure it down the front of her chest and her body's going to go into a down. Once they do we mark it with a yes and give her reward. Good girl. Good job. Repetition is important when training dogs to do new behaviors. So we're going to show her several times how to lay down. We're also going to incorporate a hand signal. I don't like to teach dogs the word yet until they've learned how to do the behavior. One of the reasons is you're going to sit there and chant down, down, down and the dog may not know how to lay down yet. So we're going to make sure that you can bet twenty bucks that the dog will do the behavior before we add the word. So once we get this going on. Niah come? Good girl. Ready? Yes. Good job. Come? Good girl. And each time. Sit. We're going to start to raise our hand signal. Yes. Before we give that reward. Come? Good. Until we can get it. Yes. Good girl. And that's how you teach your dog to lay down."
