How to Put Wood Trim on a Door

"My name's Ryan Parker with Parker Home Renovations in New Braunfels, Texas, and today I'm going to show you how to put trim on a door. If you have a door in the house that doesn't have trim around it, you may realize that that is not, it's probably not very attractive. And if you decide that you want to trim out the door, there's several different options you can go with. They have a one by four type trim that you can put on there that you can get at any local hardware store, or they have a casing such as this, that you can put around the door, which is a little bit more decorative and it's actually used a little bit more commonly. But basically what you're going to want to do is you're going to want to go to your door and the areas where you want to trim out, and you're going to want to measure from the floor all the way up to the top corner of the door. Now take that measurement and you're going to want to add whatever the width of your trim is. In this case it's two and three eighths of an inch. So you're going to want to take the measurement of the door from the floor to the top, add two and three eighths of an inch to it, and then you're going to want to cut a piece that length. Once you get a piece cut that length, then you're going to want to go ahead and you want to put the thick side of the casing out. So you're going to want to go ahead and cut the end of the casing at that measurement that you measured plus the two and three eighths of an inch, and you want to miter it at a forty-five degree angle right across here. And what that's going to do, it's going to give a nice, clean transition turn here where the side of the door trim goes up and turns to go across the top of the door trim. Now whenever you're putting casing around a door, what you want to do is you want to back off the door jamb about a quarter inch. So where, on the hinge side, you'd be about a quarter inch away from the hinges is where the trim would actually go. Then you stand your trim up in place and line it up.
