Video Transcript

"Sometimes when you go into a fish store you're going to see some really pretty gaudy fish species. Some of them are real some of them aren't. I'm Bruce with Aquatek Tropical in Austin and today we're going to discuss genetically modified painted and tattooed species. Genetic modification is a method of taking a standard hardy species and making it into a pretty one, like the Glowfish of Glowfish fame. Other practices include dying fish like you see with parrot cyclids where they take a drab colored fish, stick it in food coloring until it becomes a purple or pink, blue green fish. Generally not that harmful to the fish but it still is a stressful process. The real problems are tattooing and painting. Painting processes almost always kill about eighty percent of the fish that it's done to, where tattooing probably kills more they just don't have as good of research level on it. In general avoid picking fish that have been tattooed or painted. It's a cruel process and kills more fish than it's really worth. Until next time, I'm Bruce with Aquatek."
