Series Summary

Cornrows are a very traditional hair style originating from Africa. They are created by braiding the hair very closely to the scalp using a very specific underhand upward motion technique. Cornrows should not be too tight or uncomfortable, and they can be created either in straight lines or curved under one another. They can be left in for weeks at a time, and decorations such as beads and shells can also be woven into the braids for decoration. Cornrows are worn by both men and women alike depending on the region in the world. Braiding cornrows may look difficult, but it only a simple braid done in a different way. Once the technique is learned it is very easy for anyone to create cornrows of any style or design. This free video series walks through every angle of designing and braiding cornrows. Watch as an experienced hair stylist shows how to separate the hair, braid it painlessly and decorate it. Each braid is it's own statement and with each braid discover how to turn and angle them to create artistic patterns as well. Don't be a slave to boring braids!

Video Transcript

"Today I am going to be cornrowing my baby sister's hair. Her name is Ashley. Hi. Ashley is 12 years old and she's got a great head of hair. We don't look much alike because many of my siblings in my home and my family are adopted. We'll talk a little bit more about that. But Ashley has been one of my models since she was a baby girl. And I've been doing her hair and many other people's hair for a long time now. But today we're going to be cornrowing her hair. Specifically we're going to be putting in false hair. It's called extensions. And we're going to be cornrowing that into her hair today. So thanks for joining us and we look forward to walking you step by step through cornrowing Ashley's hair."
