Series Summary

The amphibious frog has been hopping across the earth for over 200 million years. With over 5000 species, the frog makes up 88 percent of the amphibian species. It's no wonder that frogs are found all over the world. These amphibians start their life as an egg. Breaking free of the egg, a tadpole emerges. As they begin their journey in lakes and ponds, the tadpoles slowly change their shape, growing legs and developing lungs. Clearly, it's not surprising that this miraculous transformation has caught the eye of many a folklorist. Frogs appear commonly in many fairy tales and fables as benign creatures with incredible hidden talents. For many people, frogs make excellent pets. They are relatively easy to take care of, and they are fairly docile. In this free video series, learn how to care for pet frogs. Our expert, Tim Cole, demonstrates how to take care of a variety of frogs. Learn how to care for African dwarf frogs and gray tree frogs. Also, get tips for building habitats for frogs. Want to breed frogs? Cole gives advice for breading frogs as well. So, before buying a pet frog, take a moment and learn about basic frog care today!

"Hi, my name is Tim Cole and I am with the Austin Reptile Service and I've been keeping reptiles and amphibians for over forty years. We're here to talk about breeding frogs. Breeding frogs can be rather difficult depending on the species. A lot of people put in back yard ponds and let the native frogs just naturally become attracted to it and in time most of them will just give in to the ponds and they'll do their breeding and they'll lay eggs. Eggs will hatch into tadpoles and then they'll metamorphosis into little frogs. That's probably the easiest way to do it. Some people do breed frogs in captivity for pets. Some of the horned frogs, the African pixie frogs, fire belly toads, and a lot of these are bred in captivity. Some of them are artificially inseminated. Some of them are induced into breeding on their own with let's say sound tracks to a thunderstorm. A lot of times that will encourage them to breed or their put together for breeding on a night we've got a natural thunderstorm. A low pressure system seems to be a good night for breeding them. So there's several different ways you can breed frogs."
