"Hi, I'm Hunter from the Austin Aqua-Dome. A lot of customers want to know how to build their own aquariums. In most cases, this is more difficult than simply buying a brand new aquarium especially for smaller tanks. Because a ten gallon tank can be had for ten to fifteen dollars, simply the glass and equipment to put it together may cost you even more. The way tanks are built is sealing together panes of glass with a silicone aquarium sealant. The tricky thing to get down when building a tank is to making sure that everything is perfectly squared up. If the base is not exactly flat or the sides don't fit in exactly right, the pressure and the weight of the water will spring leaks quite easily. Some people build their own tanks for very large setups. This would involve ordering custom, thick acrylic panels for the front and building the other sides of the tank out of cinder blocks, bricks, or wood and then coat it with a marine grade epoxy or some sort of pond liner. This type of setup is best left to professional installers or other experts."
