"Hi, I'm Hunter from the Austin Aqua-Dome. Maintaining a saltwater fish tank is not that much different from a fresh water tank. And thus experience in keeping freshwater fishes will help immensely in keeping saltwater. The major component of up keeping any tank is water changes. You want to change a third of the water to a half of the water at least once a month for fresh newly mixed up saltwater. Now freshwater fish aren't as dependent on water changes as saltwater because freshwater fish tend to come from much smaller more polluted areas. The ocean is a vast environment that stays very clean due to the immense volume of water that it holds. And so saltwater fish are more dependent on having constantly changed cleaner, purer water than freshwater fishes. The best ways to do this are of course regular monthly water changes or the use of specialized filters called protein skimmers to pull out some of the dissolved organic matter on a daily basis keeping the water cleaner between the water changes that you must do."
