"A neonatal nurse, is a nurse who works primarily with newborn babies. A neonatal nurse can be a R.N., or an Advance Practice Nurse. To become an R.N, you must complete either a two or four year course of study, and pass the State Licensing Exam, and become a registered nurse. Now, at this point, to become a neonatal nurse, you will go to work in the neonatal unit of a hospital. Typically, some experience in nursing is required, in acute care nursing is required, to obtain a position, in a neonatal unit. Now, you can practice as just an R.N., in the neonatal unit, or you can choose to become an Advanced Practice Nurse, in the neonatal area. Now, an Advanced Practice Nurse, is someone like a Nurse Practitioner, who has gone on to additional course of study, in that sub specialty. In most cases, it's a Masters program, and upon graduation, you will have a Masters in Nursing, and you will focus on neonatology, through your education and your experience."
