"You know as young children, and even sometimes as adults, we are fascinated by the career, of what firefighters do. What I'm going to talk about, is how to become a career firefighter. Hi, I'm Captain Joe Bruni. Becoming a career firefighter, requires someone to keep good character and integrity, first and foremost. Also, you must have graduated high school, or a GED equivalency exam, must be taken, to move on to the steps of becoming a career firefighter. You must remain in top physical condition, because one of the first things that they will determine, is if you're physically fit enough for the job, of a firefighter. Each city, state, or local government area, that has a career fire department, has different guidelines that they follow, as far as becoming a career firefighter. Some of these steps will include: taking an entrance level exam, which may be a Civil Service type of test, taking some type of physical abilities test, to determine whether you can do the work, as a firefighter, and then attending their training program. Whether it's a state run fire academy, with a state certification, or whether it's a local fire academy, each particular to the city, that you may be going to work for. Then, you will try and obtain the job of a firefighter, which will include a physical exam, a background check, and possibly, some type of polygraph exam. After you obtain employment, the next step would be to pass the probationary process, which can be anywhere from six months to a year. Keeping yourself physically fit, and in good shape, is one of the keys, along with a good character, and a good background, to move on, for the career of becoming a firefighter.
