How to Make a Knife

"You know in a survival situation, one of the key tools that you could have with you is a good knife. Hi I'm Captain Joe Bruni, and what we are going to talk about is how to construct a knife in a survival situation when you don't have a knife with you. Finding a piece of metal that is relatively flat or can be shaped into a flat type of pattern or shape is one of the first key things that we want to try and locate. We take our piece of metal and it can be forged or banged into place with a hard stone or other hard surfaces that won't break when striking the piece of metal to shape and form our blade. The next thing we want to try and find is some type of suitable material to form the handle of the blade. Preferably it could be some type of wood or plastic. However, keep in mind anything plastic that's not already sized to fit will have to be shaped as your handle. Even metal could work in certain situations, however, metal should be your last choice because metal is going to be hard on the hands when using the knife unless we soften it with some other material. A piece of wood can be placed around the metal to form a handle and then the wood or plastic held in place with some type of binding. Keep in mind that leather will work well as some type of binding, but leather often times is hard to get tight and keep it tight, having a secure handle kept in place. It may help if we take some type of cloth material or strips of cotton torn down into small strips so they can be tied around the handle first before applying any type of leather which will help keep that leather tight and bind against the handle. From that point we can begin the sharpening process of our blade using another piece of metal or some type of stone to sharpen our blade.
