"You know, understanding what course of action to take in a medical emergency can greatly enhance and predict the outcome for the rescuer and the rescuee. Hi, I'm Captain Joe Bruni. What we want to talk about is the steps to take when it comes to rescue breathing for an individual. Rescue breathing should be done by first assessing the ABC'S, or airway, breathing, and circulation in the victim. If the patient is unconscious and laying in the supine position, or on their back, we would do the chin lift/head tilt by opening the airway and pushing down on the head and lifting the chin at the same time and open that airway passage. We would do a look, listen, and feel, by putting our ear and cheek down next to the face; looking for chest rise and fall, and listening and feeling at the same time with our ear and our cheek for air exchange in the in the victim or patient. If it's been determined the patient is not breathing, we would then assess circulation by placing two fingers on the carotid artery, checking for a pulse, and then performing the steps of CPR if there is no breathing and pulse. If the person is still have breathing, or excuse me, has a pulse and a heartbeat, then rescue breathing is in order if the patient is in too true respiratory arrest and not breathing. The key would be to deliver one breath approximately every five seconds, and continue that process, while stopping every so often to reevaluate the pulse and the heart rate to ensure the person still has a heartbeat. If the heartbeat ceases, then CPR once again is in order. ABC'S are the first thing to evaluate when it comes to rescue type breathing, airway, breathing, and circulation, and then move on from there. Stay safe, and we'll see ya' next time. I'm Captain Joe Bruni."
