"I had been a journalist, and I loved it, but I never wanted my byline to be anybody's control again. So I moved to Houston, Texas, and I started working at a credit card company, which was a nightmare. I hated every moment of it, but at least it drove me to get out of there. And once day I drove by a billboard the Houston ISD was putting out that said making a difference. And it was talking about their alternative certification program for teachers. And that's how I started into alternative certification, and they placed me at my first job at Woodson. Astinta, in River Oaks, which is a really affluent area of Houston, Texas, and then my first actual job was in Woodson, which I believe is in Fifth Ward, in Houston. So it was a completely different demographic. A completely separate environment. And I was teaching fourth grade reading and language at Woodson. After student teaching I went directly to fourth grade reading and language teacher."
