"Hi, my name is Ashley Ludman from Seaside Yoga, here to answer the question, who invented Pilates. Well actually, Joseph Pilates invented Pilates. And he originally coined this type of exercise as Contrology. He didn't call it Pilates after himself. That came later on. He develop this style of physical exercise based on his practice with Martial Arts, Tai Chi, Yoga and Resistance Training. He combined all of the best pieces of these disciplines into one specific exercise discipline called Contrology. And some interesting tidbits, he was intern in a camp for the servicemen in World War I, I believe and worked with bedridden patients. He cut the different types of resistance type of training from the bed springs and worked with the patients in the hospital beds and then his pieces of equipment actually, derived from that original work in this type of rehab service. So what he found is that these patients were getting better. So he was actually one of the beginning physical therapist within this rehab movement. So Joseph Pilates originally Contrology, then it became Pilates after his death. So hope that help you to understand who develop Pilates."
