"Hi, my name is Ashley Ludman from Seaside Yoga, here to tell you a little bit about the history of Pilates. Well, originally Pilates was develop by a gentleman named Joseph Pilates, who originally coined his type of exercise Contrology because of the control that is needed to create movement efficiently from the mind to the body. And, his premise of exercise is based on a few different concepts. One is the center of awareness that you must have. Two, the ability to breath effectively, control your movements, move from your center and flow with that precision. He originally begin working with this style of exercise, as he took from different types of training, Tai Chi, Martial Arts, Yoga and Resistance Training. He then worked in the, in the interment camps with war veterans. He worked with many of them from the hospital beds where he used different forms of resistance from the beds springs and coils and resistance bands. And what he found is these, these patients began to get better and stronger. He then came over to New York in the early 1900 's and begin to work with ballerinas in his studio in Manhattan and word spread pretty quickly so, pretty soon many of the injured dancers were coming to Joseph Pilates and his wife for therapy, for conditioning, physical conditioning. And still at the same time he called his method Contrology. It wasn't after his death that Pilates was actually called Pilates and taught by many different styles of teachers. So that's a little bit about the history of Pilates and hope you found some of that interesting."
