"Hi, my name is Ashley Ludman from Seaside Yoga and the question is how many calories does Pilates burn? Well first of all, that's a multi faceted question. You have to be able to look at your individual body type. What Pilates does is it increases your muscle tone and muscle mass thereby, increasing your metabolism and decreasing your body fat percentage. That's the most important thing to look at. If you are a beginner in your Pilates program regimen, you might be going a little slower it first to understand the precision, the alignment and the breathing aspects, accessing the correct form of the mat exercises. So in the beginning, you may be going slower developing more of the strengthening benefits, and as your body then progresses and adheres to the program, you'll be able to flow through the exercises more easily, more steadily, thereby increasing the number of calories that you're actually burning in a particular Pilates session. Once you become pretty successful with that, you can do a full Pilates program within twenty minutes or so. So depending on your own muscles mass, your metabolism rate, the amount of time you're spending with Pilates and how quickly you are transitioning between the exercises, will all depend on how many calories you burn. So you can use Pilates as a cardiovascular type of workout, or you can use it as strengthening workout. Either way, you're getting benefits of increasing your metabolism to increase your calorie expenditure. So that's it in a nutshell, that's how many calories you burn in a Pilates practise."
