"So how do you build running speed, that's where your training comes to play. That's very important in terms of how you are preparing yourself to do what is called speed work. So there are different types of speed work that you can incorporate as you are training. There is speed training or track work on a track like this for example. Where you are running certain distances at a given goal speed. So the distance may be say eight two hundred meter heats. Which is half way around this four hundred meter track. And your trainer may give you specific times to run those eight two hundred meter repeats. Or it could be four hundred meter repeats or eight hundred meter repeats here on the track with specific speed goal times that you are shooting for. And then there are other types of speed work that you can incorporate as a runner. The next type is called tempo training. So a temp run is a run where you set aside a designated amount of time. So that amount of time maybe say for fifteen to twenty minutes. And what you are doing, you're running a sustained even pace for that entire twenty to say thirty minutes. Another type of training is called fork leg training another word for fork leg is called speed play. So when you are out training that could be anywhere, like it could be on the track, it could be a park for example and you choose certain landmarks, so you notice like a pole down the street, so from where you are to the pole you are going to run a certain speed. Or from the pole to say the next, the blue car down the street, so from the pole you are going to increase your speed, from point a to point b. So for fork leg or speed play you are sort of playing with your speed. Running that speed at different distances depending on what your landmarks are during the run."
