"One of the things that often gets overlooked when we are talking about sports related injuries is what happens to our bodies after we are done playing sports. A lot of times we get hurt during our careers as recreational athletes or college athletes or even professional athletes, but a lot of times it's more far reaching the effects that it has on the body down the road. One of the things that can happen is in sports it is accumulative, repetitive stress over and over and over that can sometimes cause joint degeneration, it could cause disk related problems, could cause inflammation around the joints, it could cause muscle spasms. So it's very important even for those of us that are no longer athletes per say, to make sure that we follow through with care. We make sure that we are allowing our spine and our body for that matter, to move like it was designed to move, to be free like it was designed to be free and to be able to communicate as a brain to the rest of the body like it was intended to do. Another thing we need to talk about, when we are talking about the spine and it's overall role is far as an athlete goes, is the role of the neck. A lot of times you'll see a lot of tightness in the muscle along the neck, sometimes you have joint dysfunction where the neck is not able to move or rotate like it's supposed to. When we are talking about a loss of motion in the neck, we are talking about some trouble that we have as athletes. Think about a receiver that needs to go over to the middle of the field and can't turn his neck at a full range of motion to find the ball. Or an outfielder who is running back to make a catch over his shoulder but can't turn his neck because he's got some restrictions within his joints. Not only that, but also every nerve signal that comes out of the brain has to pass through the cervical spine. If we are getting some interference up here through the cervical spine, there is a good chance that the brain can't tell the rest of the body what it needs to do. So one thing that is often overlooked when we are talking about sports related function and optimal function in the world of athletics is to make sure that our neck is free of interference, free of spasm and able to work like it's supposed to."
