Snowshoes were originally developed over 4,000 years ago somewhere in central Asia for hunters and travelers to be able to cover large areas of frozen terrain in search of food or shelter. Today, a 32 degree rainy day outside and proper snowshoes enables one to walk across stretches of frozen rain for an extended period of time. They work by distributing a person's weight over a larger surface area so they don't sink into the snow. They allow for competitive runners and athletes to continue to train throughout the winter months in areas covered in snow, as well as providing a unique outlet for general recreation and exercise. In this free video series on snowshoeing, an avid backpacker and outdoors man discusses tips for snowshoeing and camping. Find a great snowshoeing location on the Internet, and gather necessary gear like snow boots, long johns, Gortex pants and jackets and backpacking food. Find out how to stay safe in the wilderness by packing down the snow before setting up a tent and by staying hydrated with melted snow. Discover the amazing wintertime outdoors with a snowshoeing adventure.
"In this clip we want to talk about how to select an area to go overnight snowshoeing in. One quick way of getting some idea would be to go online in the National Park Service or the State Park Service and look at the areas that they mentioned might be open. Another great way to really zoom in on this is, is the ski areas. Most of the ski areas have some kind of cross country skiing and snowshoeing available. The reason this is really a good place to focus on is because the roads are open to these areas and can get you high into the mountains, whereas other areas you might want to go into, the road may be closed and mean fifty miles of walking to get to where you really want to be. Do this in accordance with your ability to navigate. It's easy to get lost in the wilderness, especially in the wintertime in snow. Many of the ski resorts will have maps of the snowshoe trails and they'll also indicate on there the level of difficulty and the mileage. This will be really helpful in terms of assessing your condition and picking a trail appropriate to your fitness."
