Summary: Long-neck turtles, also know as snake turtles, can't pull their head into their shell. Learn to care for long-neck turtles with tips from the owner of a reptile store in this free pet care video.
"Hi. My name is Tim Cole. I'm with the Austin Reptile Service and I've been keeping reptiles and amphibians for over forty years. And we're going to address the question of long-necked turtles and how to care for them. I'm going to assume that they're talking about snake-necked turtles, which is a turtle that has a long neck, comes from New Guinea and Australia and unlike other turtles that can pull their head into their shell, they actually have a long neck that folds. And they're able to fold their head up tight against their body to help protect themselves. It also enables them to ambush fish when they have quite a strike range, kind of like a snake would for a rodent. These turtles are getting more popular in the pet trade. And they get fairly large. The shell can be eight inches and the neck on that turtle can also be eight inches. This is not a turtle that would tolerate being picked up and handled. They're rather nervous, but they're very entertaining to watch and they're neat turtles to have in captivity."
