"Hi. I'm Tim Cole with Austin Reptile Service and I've been keeping reptiles and amphibians for over forty years. And we're here to talk about keeping land turtles or tortoises. I'm holding a Hingeback Tortoise. And this is in a covered pen that is outside. And they burrow into the soil to get out of heat. We've also got some shade provided here. We've got a shallow pan of water that they can get in and out of. And they are fed a variety of veggies several times a week. But, being outside, they're getting full use of the natural sunlight, which provides UV light and a heat source that they desperately need. This is a good way to keep any of your land turtles, as long as you're in the part of the country that temperatures are within the parameters that they want. This is actually an African sub-species, but they do perfectly well here in central Texas for most parts of the year."
