"Hi, I'm Tim Cole with Austin Reptile Service and I've been keeping reptiles amphibians for over forty years and we're here to talk about keeping the aquatic turtles. Some of these make better pets than others, depending on the amount of space you have, and also the climate that you live in. If you're keeping turtles that are native to the area that you live in, most of them do very well if kept outside. The main reason for this is the sun provides necessary UV light for them. It also provides the necessary heat that they require. If you keep them indoors, you have to duplicate all of this. It's much less expensive if we do keep them outside in an enclosure like this. This is an above ground pond, it's very easy to drain. We also have a homemade filter that's made with a five gallon bucket. It helps to keep it clean and we don't have to do water changes as often. But the main thing is, keeping them outdoors gets them that sunlight that they need to help synthesize their food and the vitamins they require. Even occasional insects will fall in here that they'll eat. They get supplemented with greens, and they do very well being kept outside like this."
