"Hi. I'm Tim Cole with Austin Reptile Service and I've been keeping reptiles and amphibians for over forty years. We're going to talk about building cages for snakes. If you're on a budget building a cage might be the way to go. A variety of materials can be used. Plexiglas, wood, plywood can be used. You want to be careful not to use any wood like chip board that has formica in it. That can be a problem for the snake obviously, but a lot of people have found that it's almost cheaper in the long run to buy a cage that's made for snakes. As you can see behind me we have our oriole cages that are specifically made for snakes. There are sweater box rack systems that are made for snakes. There are larger plastic cages that are made for snakes. There are wooden cages made for snakes. The primary thing is you've got air flow. These are lockable. If something gets spilled in them you want to make sure that's contained and not going to make a mess in your house. Some cages are stackable which is great for space saving. A lot of people like the rack systems because it doesn't take up a lot of space. Simple containers like this box which was bought at a container store on a rack system can make a very easy to clean and space saving cage. Some people want to go with something fancier that's a big glass front that they can look into and that's certainly understandable."
