"Identifying snakes is not easy. Whether you're trying to identify a snake you might find out in the field, or a snake that someone has been keeping as a pet. Obviously snakes that are out in the field are easier to identify by process of elimination. Field guides and accurate websites are great tools to identify snakes in the field. Having taken pictures with a digital camera makes it very easy to identify snakes you've seen out in the field. A lot of times people do not accurately describe colors and patterns when they're identifying the snake trying to describe the snake. So pictures can be a big help. There are field guides that are good for different countries, for different states. Animals that are kept in the pet trade quite often the person who has the animal will hopefully know what kind it is. If not there are a variety of ways to tell what kind of snake you're dealing with. Boas and pythons could be identified by heat sensing pits. A lot of those are present on boas and pythons. They are constrictors. There are all kinds of snakes that are commonly kept as pets coral snakes, king snakes, rat snakes, all of these are common."
