"I grew up on a farm in North Florida and I was always exposed to animals and one of the most fun experiences for me was when the veterinarian would come out and treat the animals. We had cattle and I also had a pony and we had pigs and chickens, etc. and the veterinarian would come out each year and vaccinate the cattle for various diseases and I thought that that was very cool. I got my first puppy at the age of three and when we took him to the vet clinic I thought, wow dogs have doctors too? I want to be a veterinarian when I grow up and that was something that stuck. I never thought about or dreamed of doing anything else. I had a number of cats and dogs when I was a kid so I actually watched a number of my pets suffer if you will because they weren't able to get the veterinary care that was needed and I think that was what solidified my dream of becoming a veterinarian because when you own large animals and it is economically important for your livelihood, it is just not economically feasible to spend money on the pet animals or that was the mentality and that is the mentality in certain rural areas where you are basically in a farming community so I always kind of thought that some of my pets would still be around and that I would still be able to help them such that I don't think I ever thought about doing anything else and I am very happy with my career choice. Veterinary medicine is a very challenging field to get into and so my main focus was just being a good student in junior high and high school such that I would be able to be accepted to a university which would give me the opportunity to apply for veterinary medicine provided I manage my studying and kept my grades up to be able to enter the class."
