"First of all, you have to be dependable from day one. It's helpful to spend time in a hospital. It looks good to the medical schools, that you're not only saying you want to do it, but that you've done something to show an interest in medicine. Certainly keeping your grades up. Studying hard, working hard, practicing being a compassionate person, are very important, and just really learning to love people. There are a lot of challenges to becoming a physician. When you're in college, you have to give up a lot of the partying, that a lot of other people do, so you spend a lot more time in the library, a lot more time studying than a lot of your co-students. So that's certainly, sort of the first big obstacle, and then you get into medical school, and again, you spend a lot of time studying, a lot of time working. You have to be persistent. Then, residency comes along, internship, and I think a big challenge, for me personally, was wanting to start a family, and trying to do that during internship, and residency. That wasn't easy, but I was able to do it. You have to be willing to sacrifice, and give up a lot, to become a physician, but it's definitely worth it."
