"If you're looking at a general practitioner, or someone who is practicing internal medicine, or family medicine, the average salary is about a hundred and fifty thousand dollars. Some people make less than that. Some of the surgical sub-specialties, make much more than that. When you're starting out as a physician, it's different, than when you're starting out with a typical job, because as a physician, you go through four years of college, four years of medical school, and then typically, another three to seven years of residency. Becoming a physician is different than most careers, because after you've graduated from medical school, which is an additional four years after college. You typically, do another four to seven years of training, and at that point, you're called a resident. Residents make in the range of forty thousand dollars a year. After you finish your residency, then you're considered starting out in your career, and at that point, you're usually around thirty years old, and you start out at about a hundred and twenty thousand dollars. The earning potential for a physician, again, is very dependent upon the specialty that you choose. Most physicians in this country right now, on average, are making between a hundred and fifty, and a hundred and eighty thousand dollars. The field is growing, and it's actually a great field, because there's predicted to be a significant physician shortage, over the next ten to fifteen years. It's a very steady field, and there's going to be a tremendous need for physicians, as the baby boomers get older."
