"I'm Dr. Joe Neely, and I practice with the Barton Oaks Dental Group. General dentists have four years of graduate training. They may have an undergraduate degree or a graduate degree prior to that, but the four years of dental training awards them a Doctor of Dental Surgery or a Doctor of Dental Medicine degree. They have the option of going on for additional specialty training and having a board certified specialty. Oral surgery would be the specialty that involves extraction of teeth, jaw surgery, removal, and biopsy of tissue and tumors. Periodontics is the specialty that's related to treating children. It's heavily behavioral based. A periodontist would deal with the support structures of teeth, the bone, the gums, the connective tissue. A Endodontist would deal with the internal portions of teeth, mainly doing root canals and and those types of surgeries. You have the Orthodontist who is involved in straightening teeth, and Prosthodontist who would make dentures, or do complex restorative types of of of treatment. You have some sub-specialties that are not board certified specialties; in geriatrics, temporal-mandibular joint disease, in dental health; public health."
