"Hi, my name is Dan Schmidt from the Chinese Martial Arts Center in Seminole. Today we're going to be performing the Downward Smash. So you want to start with the thumb to thumb grip. So start with your thumb together in the middle of the staff, pull apart roughly, so you're about width of your shoulders. Okay. From here, this type of smash you're going to come across your body. Okay. So the right arm goes straight out, about head level at the end of the staff, okay, then you're going to pull, then you're going to shift and slide the left hand forward, pulling the opposite hand to the hip. So you're here, slide over, smash, pull, slide over, smash. Okay. So it's important to keep the palm down, make sure that the fist is tightly to the hip for control. So pull back naturally, come straight over with the hand and let the staff naturally slide, smash straight down. Okay. If you notice the wrist is turned, the elbow is kept slightly up but relax the shoulder. Pull straight down, come over and smash. So here, here. That's how you do the Downward Smash."
