on 8/2/2008 It's not as fast as spinning on the ball of your foot, but one problem I have practicing this kick is that I get dizzy if I keep doing ball-of-the-foot spins. Another problem, which Sifu Mallon points out, is where the kick will go. If I'm off, and say I'm spinning so that the right leg is the striking leg, I'll kick before hitting my target or glance it instead of dead-on. I've tried this kick just a few times at home just after watching the video, and it makes you break down and analyze what you're doing when you first have to concentrate on that foot placement. Speed must come later.

"Hello, I'm Sifu Mallon with the Clearwater Kung Fu Center. This is my assistant Melissa and this is kick boxing. The next kick boxing technique we're going to focus on is called our spin side kick. A spin side kick, I'm going to demonstrate it for you at normal speed then I'll have Melissa go through it and we'll point out some of the finer details. I start from my fighting guard, my front foot is going to take a step. I prefer to do the stepping action here, some people prefer to do a spin on the ball of the foot, this is a little bit harder to do, in the beginning, and the spin on the foot can actually change where your kick is delivered. So, I like to go ahead and build up my energy by performing a small step with my lead foot. So, my left foot takes a step forward and I turn my heel to where I want to kick and where my head goes, my body follows. So, from the foot, my head twists over, my weight shifts from right leg to left leg. I twist my whole body, see the target and now my right leg lifts, coming out to the side of the body, and I throw the side kick, land. Again, more more time, normal speed. I go side step, turn the head, kick, land. Melissa lets come forward, we'll go through a couple little parts of the kick. We have a little bit smaller base than usual, our forward foot takes a step and we turn the heel. Do that one more again. This one, we actually want to lift the foot from here and bring it to here, as that foot turns. Wherever your heel goes is where your target goes so really turn the foot more. Shift the weight this way, draw this foot over, sliding the toe, look, now pick this leg up and fire that kick, land. One more time Melissa. The foot steps, turn the foot, point the heel, turn the head, look. We want to remember that whenever we're doing spinning or turning techniques, where your head goes your body follows so your head has to initiate the turn. This is spin side kick, kick boxing."
