Series Summary

Fireworks were developed in China around 206 BC. They were invented by Taoist Monks who created them by accident through playing with gunpowder in their spare time. Later pyrotechnicians in China were very well respected for their unique skill and bravery since this was and is never a safe venture. Eventually there became a scientific method and strategy to making fireworks which developed into its own profession that, of course, still flourishes today. We use fireworks at many national celebrations in America such as July 4th and New Years as well as sporting events and concerts and we can also use smaller fireworks to celebrate personally on a smaller scale. In this free fireworks safety video series, let a fire captain explain how to safely ignite sparklers. Sparklers are confused as one of the safer fireworks options, but sparklers burn as hot as 1800 degrees. He discusses dressing, choosing a location, storing and lighting sparklers and putting sparklers in the hands of children. He also talks about extinguishing sparklers properly, etiquette, handling lit sparklers and finding local fireworks laws. Sparklers and other fireworks are not toys and should always be used under adult supervision.

Video Transcript

"You know, sparklers and consumer fireworks can add fun to any holiday event or party. Before purchasing any type of fireworks, first check to see if they're legal in the state or jurisdiction where you reside and plan to use them. If they are, only purchase consumer fireworks from a legitimate person or booth that happens to sell them. Do not ever purchase illegal fireworks, or fireworks that have been homemade, and not intended to be used for consumer use. Fireworks that may be used at a public display are not the consumer type of fireworks, and never intended to be used by the everyday consumer. They are not only illegal to be used by consumers, they are also very dangerous, which can cause injury or death. Something as simple as the sparkler, or any type of consumer firework such as this fountain, could be purchased if they're legal in your jurisdiction or state. But always purchase only consumer fireworks. Never anything illegal or homemade or any type of firework intended to be used for true public display. I'm Caption Joe Bruny. Stay safe, and we'll see you next time."
