Series Summary

Fireworks were developed in China around 206 BC. They were invented by Taoist monks who created them by accident through playing with gunpowder in their spare time. Later pyrotechnicians in China were very well respected for their unique skill and bravery since this was and is never a safe venture. Eventually there became a scientific method and strategy to making fireworks which developed into its own profession that, of course, still flourishes today.Fireworks are displayed at many national celebrations in America such as July 4th and New Years as well as at sporting events and concerts. Smaller fireworks are used to celebrate personally on a smaller scale. In this free pyrotechnics video series fire captain, Joe Bruni, demonstrates several safety tips for handling and igniting fireworks. Bruni begins by discussing legal and illegal fireworks and how to properly research the local firework laws for a given area. He then discusses several safety tips for using fireworks, such as: proper safety equipment, transportation, ignition, behavior, disposal, firework kits and environment. Bruni discusses the dangerous combinations of mixing alcohol and smoking with firework usage. Watch these videos and learn to avoid injury and accidents by safely using commercial fireworks.

Video Transcript

"You know, consumer fireworks can add fun and excitement to any part of your holiday event. Hi, I'm Captain Joe Bruni, with over three decades of firefighting, and emergency medical service experience. Prior to purchasing any type of consumer type of firework, like the common fountain types of fireworks, that emit showers of sparks, the common snakes or snaps sometimes referred to, or the common individual common sparkler. Before purchase of consumer fireworks, always check local laws, because they vary from state to state. States such as Florida, allow consumer types of fireworks, such as you see before me, like sparklers, and these fountains. Other states like Pennsylvania, only permit the local sparkler. Other states may not permit any type of consumer firework, to be purchased at all. If they are legal, only purchase consumer type fireworks, that are approved by the Consumer Safety Commission. I'm Captain Joe Bruni. Stay safe, and we'll see you next time."
