"Hi. This is John Stewart and this is how to keep your fire burning once you've lit your fire. Once you've got your fire burning, you don't constantly need to be piling wood on top of it. This is just going to make you go through your wood supply. So once it's burning just let it slowly burn. It can go to a pile of coals. That fire's going to be really, really hot so that it will be able to ignite pieces of wood once you put them on there the second time. So once you've got your fire burning, you don't have to keep it stacked up unless you want to have a bright flame to light your area. In that case you can pile wood all night long in order to keep a nice bright flame to light your area up. If you don't need that, just let your fire slowly burn. Once you don't begin to see flames and it goes to just coals, you probably need to put some more wood on it so that you do have a constant flame. Because if you don't have that constant flame, if you lay a piece of wood on coals it's going to smoke a while before it does ignite and ember to get a flame going again. So that's how you keep your fire going once you've built your fire."
