Hello I'm Sifu Mallon with the Clearwater Kung Fu Center. This is my assistant Melissa and this is Kung Fu for Health. The footwork that we're going to begin with is called our fighting stance. This is the foundation of all the different footwork exercises that you'll see. To start with your feet. Okay you can place both your feet together. You're going to turn your right foot out forty-five degrees. You're going to step forward with your left foot, about the width of your shoulders, or outside width of your shoulders. Okay, now you’ll notice that both feet are pointing in the same general direction. So if I take two lines pointing from my toes they'll both follow out this way. A lot of times you'll see people make the mistake of going through the position with their rear foot turned back, or their rear foot turned this way. This doesn't give you a very mobile stance. So you want to make sure that both feet are turned in the same direction. We also want to place the weight on the balls of your feet. You don't necessarily want to go lifting your heels up like this, but you want to feel the pressure, okay, on the ball of your foot. The best way to do this is to rock back and forth so that you can feel where your center of gravity is. Okay, and you feel the pressure on the ball of your foot. The hands are in what's called a split guard position. Melissa's going to take her left hand, okay, and lift it up this way. She's going to bring her right hand, crossing the lower body this way. Her shoulders stay relaxed. The upper arm will be used mainly for blocking high techniques. The lower arm will be mainly blocking for lower techniques. For strong, very strong body techniques, both hands would come together. This is called our fighting stance. I'll perform it on a straight angle so you can see it from the forward position here. Okay, and then you will repeat the same thing on the opposite side. This is fighting stance, Kung Fu for Health.
