"Most of the hitches that we have discussed so far have involved tying the rope to itself. This next hitch is actually going to be tied around a poll itself. It's called the clove pitch. It's not the most useful know in the world, because it comes untied very easily, it slips. You don't want to use it for anything really heavy and certainly not anything where safety is an issue. But you start by going around like so, to make a loop and go around and over the top. Then you make another pass through, and bring it through this way. A good way to check your clove hitch to make sure it's tied correctly is if you pull it like that it won't pull through, and if you pull it this way it won't pull through. So, a useful way to make the clove hitch a little stronger is to just keep going and tying more. But they're other knots that are easier to deal with than that."
