Series Summary

Those of us living amidst the mountains of sky scrapers, fields of concrete, and the rivers of highways can truly appreciate the adventure of camping in the pristine great outdoors. While it is simpler, there are tasks to be done that are unfamiliar to us that make camping not quite as simple as staying at home. Consequently many times the camping experience is more stressful than relaxing. However, preparations can be made and skills improved before “roughing it”. One such skill that is important to master in order to camp successfully is knot tying. A broad base of knot tying knowledge will allow you to secure tent poles, carry bottles, and secure tarps and tents to stakes and trees. Knot tying is a useful skill, especially when the person doing the tying is aware of a number of different knots for different applications. In this free video series, an Eagle Scout will teach a number of different knots and how to tie them, as well as tips on when to use these knots. You'll learn the importance of tying knots, how to tie the right knots, and what makes a good knot. Next, specific knots will be explained, such as the slipknot, the surgeon's knot, the fisherman's knot, and many more. With these tips and techniques, you'll be able to tie up all kinds of loose ends.

Video Transcript

"So, you might wonder why are knots important to know? Well, the main reason is, just because they're really useful. They're useful every day around your house, for storing things, in the kitchen people use knots. Also, knots are useful in camping, obviously, around the camp site, setting up your tent. There's even some more specialized camping things you could do. Also, knots are useful in boating, search and rescue for safety if you ever get in a situation where you might need to render help to someone. It's a good idea to know knots and how to use them. And to be able to implement them instantly, rather than having to look in your book, or think about it, or any of that. But usually I use knots for just camping and general activities, and sometimes rock climbing. But, all of them are very useful and it's not terribly hard to learn most knots."
