Ever attend a concert by one of your favorite bands and come away disappointed? Most of us have, disillusioned by a lackluster performance on stage by the band. But there is another kind of post-concert let down which can be even more discouraging: when the band seems on but the sound doesn't live up to their (or your) standards. You know the situation. Instead of talking about how much they like to party and drink beer or how much they love your town, the band is busy complaining to the sound engineer. Sound is key to enjoying a performance, or even a basic speaking engagement. If you can't hear clearly what a person is saying, then you're just wasting your time. In this free technology video series a multimedia technology expert, Joel Bennet, will demonstrate how to properly set up a PA system. Bennet will begin by discussing the components associated with the public address system. He'll then explain how to properly set up the components, such as: the mikes, mixers, speakers, cables and digital recorder. Bennet will then reveal a few useful suggestions for wrapping up the cables and breaking down the system. Watch these videos and learn to set up a PA system correctly today.
"In this clip I'm going to show you the basic components of a PA system and also provide you with some tips on how to transport your gear on location. The equipment you'll need includes a microphone. This one happens to be a Shure SM 58 which is one of the commonly used mikes in live events because it's inexpensive and durable. You'll also need a mike stand with a boom, mike cable and a mixer. You'll also need a pair of speakers. We happen to be using active or power speakers which basically means the amplifier is built in. These are commonly used in small portable PA systems because it eliminates the need for an amplifier. You'll also need speaker stands, speaker cable, AC cords, power strip and gaff tape. Now there are many additional components that can be added to a PA system. For instance, an out boarding cue. But this basic system will get you by. When transporting your equipment use milk crates or bins to carry all the cable and miscellaneous equipment. You can also use a dolly or hand truck to help you move the gear on location. It also helps to have the name and location of the room you'll be setting up in so when you get on location you're not wasting time looking for it. It also helps to have a contact name and number in case there are any problems. So now you know the basic equipment you'll need and how to prepare before you get on site."
