"Hi, my name is Dr. Randy Hyde. I've invited Amy to talk with me about enuresis. You know, Randy, I have close family members and some friends that have big problems with bed wetting with their children, and it seems strange, but they tend to be more than one child in the same family that has this issue. What are some of the causes? You know, that's a great point. Parents most often blame themselves--gosh, am I bad parent? Why can't I teach my child how to potty train? Or they blame the child, and there's all this shame and guilt. It's a huge problem emotionally, and you identified it: it's inherited. It's genetics--it runs through genes. If a child has one parent who struggled with enuresis growing up, they have a forty percent chance themselves of having enuresis. If both parents struggled with enuresis, there's a seventy percent chance that they themselves will struggle with enuresis. That's huge! So, it does, it runs in families."
