"Because staying dry is so important when you're going backpacking, it's really, really good to test all of your rain gear before you go. So, one really effective way to do that is go ahead pack your pack up exactly the way you're going to when you go hiking. Put on the clothes that you would be hiking in and then go and put on your rain gear, put on your hiking boots that you should waterproof. Put on your rain pants, put on your pack cover and put on your backpack and see if you can fit in the shower. Go and literally stand in the shower and let water pour over you or go in the backyard and get somebody to squirt you with the hose and find out if there's any leaks. Because even though these factory made things that say that they're waterproof, sometimes there will be leaks through the seams and that's a real problem that you need to fix before you go. So, even though it sounds ridiculous, it's really, really good to actually do that, to actually get yourself totally and completely drenched and all of your gear just to make sure everything should be totally dry by the time you're done. If there's anything that's not, be sure to waterproof it before you go on your trip."
