In this clip we're going to talk about edema. When massaging your dog and there is edema present, you want to make sure not to massage the area that is inflamed, but rather massage around it. You can do circular motions around it drawing the heat away from the edema; you can also open up the area above. If it's on the leg, for instance, you can massage upwards above the edema, and you can also massage below it, and this is going to help to open up the capillaries and the blood vessels and help the edema to spread out through the body so that the dog's edema can slowly dissipate. You also do want to talk to your vet to see if there is anything else serious going on where you might want to use a little bit of ice on the area for maybe ten to fifteen minutes, or if there's any type of stretching movements that you want to do. But just make sure not to put your hands directly onto the edema because there usually will be heat associated with inflammation and you don't want to do anything that can harm your dog.
