"So, now that we have worked our clay into a general rounded shape. What we are going to do is we are going to press it down on to the table to give it more of a flat bottom and sort of lead us in that direction. So by pressing and turning up it gives us a idea of where the flat surface needs to be and we are just going to spread it out and get an idea of the bottom of this rat. You can see on this one he's got a pretty good surface there. We have pulled out the legs here but right here he's got a nice solid surface for displaying him. What we are going to do is we are going to work our hands all the way around. Smoothing out the clay if the clay starts to dry or we start to see cracks where we are smoothing we want to make sure to add some water but right now this looks pretty good and I am just going to keep pulling this around and if there is any excess I want to pull it to the front because that's eventually going to be our head. So I am going to pull it right around to the front and work our finger over this. I always tell my students that you have to imagine as your sculpting clay imagine that your actually touching the rat and feel the coutures of what it's body should be. Right into the heed. Here we go."
