"Then different manipulation of the needles can be used to treat different kind of disease, or conditions. We have two basic manipulations, disbursing and tonifying. For tonifying manipulation, after we inserted the needles, we rotate the needles with a fast frequency, but then we push up and down with a slow motion. That's tonifying, and that can be used to treat the deficiency condition. For instance, if there is a lung indeficiency causing dry coughing, then we can use this manipulation. For the dispersing manipulation, we manipulate the needles with big push up and down motion, but we rotate needles slower, with much slower frequency. And that's for the excess condition, for instance, when there is a phlegm accumulating in the lung, or when there is a water accumulate in your abdominal area, or the lower leg, then we use this dispersing method to release the excess toxin, either water, or phlegm, or blood; stasis, food stasis to treat this kind of excess condition."
