Series Summary

Softball is a team sport that is especially popular in the United States. It is a direct descendant of baseball, and the rules of both sports remain substantially similar. A softball game can last anywhere from four to nine innings, depending on the league, rules, and type of softball. However, seven innings is the most common amount. In each inning, each team bats until three batters have been put out, and the teams take turns batting. Officially, which team bats first is decided by a coin toss, although a league may decide otherwise at its discretion. The most common rule is that the home team bats second, as batting second is advantageous. Once a softball pitcher has mastered the basics of pitching, whether it be the windup, delivery, or basic accuracy, it's time for them to move on to advanced pitching techniques. In this free video series, a softball coach will demonstrate how to grip a number of softball pitches, including the two-seam and four-seam fastballs, a changeup, curveball and screwball. After the grips have been covered, there will be a demonstration of how to throw these pitches, as well as how to throw a rise and drop pitch in softball. With these tips, grips and drills, any softball pitcher will be able to stockpile their arsenal with a number of pitches to get batters out.

Video Transcript

"In this segment, we're going to teach you guys how to properly warm up, as far as pitching is concerned. Now, normally there's different techniques as far as warming up. One, start off with just simply tossing the ball like this, and then isolating your arm without moving your feet, by doing a couple of circles. After every, after every couple of pitches you move back closer towards the mound, now adding the footwork movement to your pitching. As you step back further when you get closer to the mound, we do something called a walk through, which we take a couple of steps, while we're doing the pitching motion. And, after that usually we add a long toss, and then we actually take a couple of pitches on the mound. And, that's the way we properly warm up."
