We're going to go to simple snaffles. When we talk about a simple snaffle, we're saying one that does not require any kind of leverage. When you have a snaffle, and when we talk about snaffle, we're saying that this bit has a hinge in the center, that when we pull back, is going to create that leverage we've learned goes against the roof of their mouth. There is definitely some pressure put on the corners or, of the lips, but our biggest effective piece is this piece that goes up against the roof of the mouth. We then have the opportunity to create a little more assertive feeling within that sensitive area, or a bit more gentle. So much of the type of bit we choose is dependent on the behavior of the horse. This would still be considered quite a mild bit; however it does have the contour of what we call a slow twist. A slow twist is when we take the metal, this being just stainless steel, and we create kind of a twisted nature. It puts ridges and grooves, and it makes the horse feel as though he needs to be a bit more mindful, even in the more gentle nature of what we call the loose cheek. The loose cheek is that where the ring can circle completely around so as we put tension to the rein, the rein itself can move as well as the ring can move. That takes away some of that kind of harder, more forceful pressure that other types of bits might imply.
